WCYHA PWA Head Coach, Al Haga and PWA Assistant Coach/SQA Head Coach, Eddie MacDonald have been selected to coach the Region 5 Kohlman Cup Teams. Coach Haga will be coaching the Region 5 2001 Team, and Coach MacDonald will be coaching the Region 5 2002 Team.
The Kohlman Cup is an annual all-star hockey showcase tournament that closes the traditional WAHA hockey season. In its 10th year, the tournament pits each of the 6 WAHA regions against one another to determine a statewide champion at both the Pee Wee Major (2001) and Pee Wee Minor (2002) levels. At the conclusion of the two day event, two Team Wisconsin teams, 2001 and 2002, will be selected from the tournament and these players will represent Wisconsin in Minnesota at the end of the summer at a AAA tournament.
The Kohlman Cup is limited exclusively to Tier II Pee Wee Players only and a player must have played Pee Wee for the 2013-2014 season. The Kohlman Cup allows the top Pee Wee age level players in Wisconsin to test themselves against the best Tier II players in each WAHA region in games versus other regions along with a skills session on the weekend.
This season's Kohlman Cup Tournament will be held in Onalaska, WI on April 5 & 6, 2014. Tryouts for the Region 5 team will be held Thursday, March 20 at the Ponds in Brookfield. Visit www.kohlmancup.com for more details and to register.
The opening game of our home tournament was a rough one as Waukesha came out swinging and scored two goals in the first period. Pearse Schilling (assist Samantha Bandholz) was able to score the first period. However, Waukesha answered with two more goals in the second putting them up 4-1. In the third period, Samantha Bandholz scored a goal, but was answered by Waukesha again. The final score was 2-5 Waukesha.
However, the PeeWee C team was not ready to give up despite the loss in the first round. In the second game of the tournament against West Madison, the offense was firing on all cylinders. In the first period Dylan Helt and Pearse Schilling scored (Johnny Klabechek assist). In the second period Michael Canard (Cole Kubiak/Matthew Rawson assist), Matthew Rawson, and Cole Kubiak all scored with only one anwering goal from Madison putting us up 5-1 in the second period. In the final period Samantha Bandholz was able to find the open net and scored twice (assist Madeline Foss and Cole Kubiak). The game ended with a final score of 7-2 Washington Ice.
In the final game of the tournament, The Washington Ice PeeWee C team was up against Shaw, which is one of our division competitors. The first period was a defensive battle, as neither team was able to find an open shot. Heading into the second period, Samantha Bandholz was able to get by the defense and made the first goal of the game. Shaw continued to struggle offensively as the goalie Kody Lucas continued to successfully block every shot. In the third period, Matthew Rawson was able to make an excellent shot moving the PeeWee C team up to 2-0 a the final buzzer sounded. Kody Lucas blocked 20 out of 20 shots on goal for a shut out and for the third place win!!!
