PWA defeats Mosinee 5-1 to win 3rd Place at State

Our PWA team travelled to Eagle River on March 15-16 for the 2014 WAHA State Championships Tournament.  In their first game, the Ice took on the Oregon Panthers. The Ice set the tone early, with goals from 4 separate players in the first, to take a 4-0 lead at the end of the period.  The Panthers stole momentum early in the second, scoring 2 goals in the first 7 minutes.  But the Ice responded quickly with Peyton Kesselhon's 2nd goal of the game, on his way to a Hat Trick.  Captain, Charlie Werner, also helped lead the charge with 3 assists.  PWA finished off the Oregon Panthers 10-2, to set up a semi-final game against season rival, the Fox Valley Blades.

Similar to the previous 3 games the teams had played in the regular season, the Semi-Final game was a defensive battle.  Fox Valley opened the scoring with a goal 1 minute into the second period.  The game remained tied until Ethan Coughlin knocked home a rebound at the 8 minute mark in the 3rd.  The Ice struggled keeping momentum in the 3rd, as they had 3 penalties to kill during the period, and couldn't get another goal accross the line before regulation ended 1-1.

In the overtime period, the puck took an unfortunate bounce off a Fox Valley skate, which led to a 2 on 1 break out, and a Fox Valley game winning goal 1:53 into the overtime period... A heartbreaking loss, 2-1.

In the 3rd place game Sunday afternoon, the Ice bounced back quickly from the heartbreak the night before, in their matchup with the Mosinee Pride.  An Adam Butler goal 14 seconds into the game set the tone.  The entire team kept on pounding the net with shots, softening up the Mosinee defense.  The Ice outshot Mosinee 41-11 in the game, with four players scoring goals in the game, led by Adam Butler's 2.  The Ice put the game away in the 3rd with 3 goals, in addition to killing a 6 on 3 power play, when Mosinee pulled their goalie to try to mount a comeback.  The Ice won the game 5-1, and captured 3rd Place in the 2014 WAHA 2A State Tournament.

The PWA team finished the season with a record of 41-7-4.  Congratulations to the skaters and coaches of PWA on a great season!
