The Ice defeats Waunakee 5-0 to capture 3rd Place at State

The Squirt B team battled hard to bring home the 3rd Place trophy from the Squirt 2B State Tournament.

The Ice opened the tournament on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 4-1 win over the SHAW Timberwolves.  The Ice took control of a 1-1 game with a goal in the second and two in the third to finish off the Timberwolves.  Strong team defense and solid goaltending as well as balanced scoring with goals from four players generated the victory.  SHAW’s goal was only the second power play goal given up by the Ice all season.  It was also the only goal the Ice gave up against SHAW in four contests (4-0, 2-0, 4-0, and 4-1).

In the semi-finals on Saturday evening against the eventual State Champion Fox Valley Blades the Ice lost a dramatic, heartbreaking game 1-0 in seven overtimes.  Excellent goaltending, great team defense, and a solid penalty-kill unit kept the Blades off the scoreboard for nearly ninety minutes of hockey.  Meanwhile the Ice kept pounding away at the Fox Valley net period after period.   In a game that included a trip around the ice by the Zamboni between the 2nd and 3rd overtimes, a bathroom break for the players following one of the later overtimes, and an offer by the officials for a shootout, someone had to score and unfortunately the Blades outlasted the Ice.

In the 3rd Place game on Sunday afternoon against the Waunakee Wildcats the Ice took control early and never looked back with a goal in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 victory and the 3rd Place trophy.  Another balanced scoring attack with goals from four players as well as great goaltending and defensive play kept the Wildcats off the board as the Ice recorded its seventeenth shutout of the season.

The Ice finished the season at 28-9-3.
